Hidden Figures (2015 US) Three black women working at segregated Langley, VA Research Center (NASA) work to prove their engineering capabilities to a very white, very male work force. This is a biographical drama starring Taraji Henson, Octavio Spenser, and Jannelle Monae. The action takes place around John Glenn’s historic trip to space. IRL Glenn would not get into a spaceship unless the “smart lady” (Taraji Henson) checked the math. She did and she was spot on. I just loved this film. I took my then teenage daughter to see it when it was in theaters. So did a lot of other Mom’s because it did very well at the box office. Hensen played real life human computer Katherine Jackson who was presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Obama at the age of 95. Jackson passed away in 2020. What I loved about it most was the casting and their performances. I loved the sea of men in white button down shirts, black ties, pocket protectors and wire framed glasses. That was a deliberate choice because the colorfully dressed ladies stood out. TBH these ladies especially Katherine Jackson did stand out. Kevin Costner, who played the mission director, said you have to find the genius within the geniuses referring to Jackson. Find it on Disney plus or Hulu or for rent on most streaming.
