Highlander (1986 US) A group of immortals battle it out because…..wait for it…..There can be only one. This is one of my favorites not because it’s a great film but because it’s so fun. The flaws make it unique and endearing. I love how they cast a Scotsman to play an Egyptian/Spaniard (Sean Connery) and a Frenchman (Christopher Lambert) to play a Scotsman. Neither could get their accents right and was the source of many jokes. I love how they managed to hide their swords and then magically pull them out like they came from another dimension. A sort of Dr. Who jacket. The series that was spun off of this was notorious for this. One character in the show, a petit Asian lady pulled out a broadsword from her tiny leather waist length jacket. I laughed so hard I still remember it decades later. I really like the cinematography in this of the Scottish Highlands. Quite gorgeous. BTW the sequels kinda suck but the series was fun. I am taking the first film on its own merits and ignoring the sequels. Highlander the film had a killer soundtrack. A killer Queen soundtrack to be precise. Queen did the music for it. Remember “Who Wants To Live Forever”? Yup from Highlander.
Now to the juicy bit. A reboot is in the works with Henry Cavill as the Highlander. Ummm Yeah. Dave Bautista has been cast as the Kurgan. Even better. It should be out either late this year or next. I heard a rumor that it was in principal photography last year but I can’t confirm.
