Mudbound (2017 US) It’s #FemaleFilmmakerFriday and todays entry is this historical drama by the insanely talented Dee Rees. Two families grapple with civil rights in the WWII era, one black and one white. This is such a well done provocative film proving once again that women can excel in all genres and all subject matters. I know I was shocked too (I’m kidding. Don’t @ me). This was an incredible character study of the two families trying to figure it out. I especially loved the cinematography by Rachel Morrison. She was nominated for an Oscar for this. The ONLY woman to be nominated in that category. After this film she went on to do Black Panther. This was a particularly dificult film to shoot because, lets face it, a field isn’t much fun to look at but Morrison made it interesting. Shot after shot she does a great job. Of course part of that is directing and Rees exceeds the norm. The film was recognized but not enough, in my opinion. My thought is that at the time the big awards shows were reluctant to recognize streaming because it competed with the box office. Just a thought though. There are a few violent scenes in it which can be dificult to watch mainly because you get attached to the characters and don’t want to see harm come to them. A mark of great writing, directing and acting. Mary J. Blige had a standout performance as a wife and mother. I didn’t even know that was her until I looked it up. She was that transformed. This is a Netflix original and should be available in all regions.
