Passing (2021 US) It’s #FemaleFilmmakerFriday and todays entry is this historical drama from Rebecca Hall. Two women, one black and one white-passing rekindle their childhood friendship. Based on the Harlem Renaissance novel by Nella Larsen. Hall makes her directing debut after years being in front of the camera. Hall has quite the eye for the camera. She should continue. The photography was fantastic. Shot in black and white in either Hi def or ultra high def, we get crisp if not sharp black, white and greys. The time period is the 20’s where of course all film was black and white but very low definition. I love the added touch that Passing was filmed in the same aspect ratio as was in the twenties. Ruth Negga stars as Clare (white passing) and Tessa Thompson as Irene. The two try their damndest to come to terms with Clare’s choice, As it turns out Passing doesn’t go down well with anyone, really. These two ladies kill it in the acting department. I love Ruth Negga’s work but damn her name is hard. This film was nominated for a shit ton of awards and won many of them. I feel this is another film that got overlooked in the pandemic straight to streaming trend. Unfortunate! Find it exclusively on Netflix.
