She Never Died (2019 CA) It’s #FemaleFilmmakerFriday and todays entry is this fantasy/horror from Audrey Cummings. An immortal woman hunts down bad people and eats certain body parts. It’s more complex than that but you get the drift. One of my pet peeves is that women can’t or shouldn’t make films that depict anger or depravity. A good female filmmaker makes films about relationships and stay in your lane, dammit. You just don’t see many “women are angry” films from anyone so when I find them I like to highlight them just to be contrary. Apparently that one step too far. To be fair Cummings did a lot of work directing Ginny and Georgia on Netflix which is solidly in the relationship drama. So Cummings has quite the range. This film is good to watch after you had a bad day at the office or you turned on the news and saw that, hey I just lost another right. I loved, loved Olunike Adeliyi as the immortal. She dominates every scene she is in. Clearly Cummings gave her the space to be her best. The fight scenes were quite interesting and Adeliyi clearly did some training. I would tell you what the fantasy link is but that would ruin it. Find it on Tubi for free or on Amazon.
