Sleepy Hollow (1999 US) Tim Burton brings us his take on the classic horror tale by Washington Irving. Set in 1799 Sleepy Hollow, New York, the headless horseman in this tale is a Hessian soldier who’s head was lopped of by a cannon ball. You will remember Hessians from the depiction of Washington crossing the Delaware in “The Crossing” and of course history. Burton taps Johnny Depp as a young neurotic Ichabod Crane, Christina Ricci and Christopher Walken as the Headless Horseman when his head was on. Ray Park (Darth Maul) did the Horseman stunts when his head was off. As it turns out Walken can’t ride a horse. Burton does a great job with production design and this film is no exception. When you can take a random screenshot of the film and it’s interesting you know that the photography and design is good. To boot this is before the industry went nuts with CGI. If you like Tim Burton’s work which many people do then you will like this. It’s fun, not a great watch but fun. Find it on Tubi, Pluto and Peacock or for rent on most streaming.
