The Banker (2020 US) The Banker follows the true story of two black entrepreneurs Bernard Garrett and Joe Morris played by Anthony Mackie and Samuel L Jackson, as they navigate segregated America in the 1950’s and 60’s. I have to say it should be called The Banker(s) cuz there are two of them. I did some checking and apparently one of the family members disputed the film but from what I could gather the dispute had to do with family matters which were not talked about that much. I tried to do some cursory investigations into the matter at hand, the business side but I couldn’t find much. However, Apple TV stands by the film and says that they got info from transcripts and the people involved. I really enjoyed this film. Mackie and Jackson are just so likeable and fun that whatever the issue is with the film they can cover it up. There was some ambiguity towards the end having to do with the practice of red lining but there was no actual way to clear that up. It was well paced, well shot and lovely production design. The film was supposed to be released earlier but Me Too allegations from a family member towards another family member who was also a producer shut it down for a bit. Apple removed the producer in question, Garretts son, and released it on their streaming site cuz you know, pandemic and all. Find it on Apple TV
Bonus: The LA Conservatory does a walking Art Deco tour which featured the buildings in the movie of which Garrett and Morris owned. However, when I went they did not talk about The Banker(s). Hopefully they have added that to the tour now. https://www.laconservancy.org/tours
